WHEREAS, Jennie Ward and Kelly Smith, two young tennis players on the Mills E. Godwin High School tennis team, enjoyed an exceptional 1994 season; and

WHEREAS, playing doubles on the tennis team from Godwin High School, in Henrico County, Jennie Ward and Kelly Smith compiled an outstanding 13-1 record; and

WHEREAS, Jennie Ward, who is a sophomore at Godwin, and Kelly Smith, who is a junior, then won the Colonial District championship and the Central Region championship to advance to the Group AAA state tournament; and

WHEREAS, in the state quarterfinals, the team of Jennie Ward and Kelly Smith defeated a team from Tallwood High School, 6-4, 7-5, then defeated a team from the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, 6-4, 6-1, in the state semifinals; and

WHEREAS, capping a nearly flawless year, Godwin's Jennie Ward and Kelly Smith then defeated a team from First Colonial High School to win the Group AAA state championship; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Jennie Ward and Kelly Smith be hereby commended for so brilliantly representing Mills E. Godwin High School during the 1994 tennis season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to Jennie Ward and Kelly Smith in honor of their state tennis championship.
