HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 724
Commending the Pine Knot Advisory Committee.

WHEREAS, in 1905, President and Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt established a retreat from the White House, near Scottsville in southern Albemarle County; and

WHEREAS, this retreat, dubbed "Pine Knot" by Mrs. Roosevelt, was a simple frame cottage without plumbing or insulation that was used by the President and the First Lady as often as their schedules allowed, including the week between Christmas and New Year's in 1905, 1906, and 1907; and

WHEREAS, Pine Knot is listed on both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places; and

WHEREAS, the Theodore Roosevelt Association of Oyster Bay, New York, the current owner of the property, has arranged for a local advisory committee, headed by Professor Emeritus William H. Harbaugh of the University of Virginia, to restore the cottage and prepare it and the 96-acre site to become a public place, with ownership passing eventually to a Virginia entity, public or private; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Pine Knot Advisory Committee for overseeing the partial restoration of the cottage in accordance with the principles of historic restoration and for interlacing the picturesque wooded site with nature trails; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly congratulate the Pine Knot Advisory Committee and the Theodore Roosevelt Association on the enthusiastic response of the nearly 300 members of the general public who attended the first scheduled open house at Pine Knot on Saturday, February 18, 1995; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Professor Emeritus William H. Harbaugh as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the exemplary activities of the Pine Knot Advisory Committee.
