HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 718 On the death of Turner Lewis Foddrell.

WHEREAS, Turner Lewis Foddrell, a member of the Patrick County Foddrell family and an internationally renowned jazz and blues musician, died on January 31, 1995; and

WHEREAS, a native of Patrick County, Turner Foddrell, together with his son Lynn, carried on the Foddrell family musical tradition that has been passed from parents to children for generations; and

WHEREAS, known for the unique style of their blues music, the Foddrells traveled from Patrick County to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., to Carnegie Hall in New York City, and to Holland to perform their music in front of crowds as large as 30,000; and

WHEREAS, Turner Foddrell, who sang the blues and played the acoustic guitar and bass, was the son of the late Posie and Allie Edwards Foddrell, the patriarch and matriarch of the Foddrell family; and

WHEREAS, Turner Foddrell was a member of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy, the North Carolina Blues Society, the Commission of the Arts in Richmond, and the Blue Ridge Folklife Association; and

WHEREAS, an original and talented musician whose recordings are preserved by the Smithsonian Institution, Turner Foddrell leaves a unique musical legacy to be taken up, renewed, and preserved by his descendants; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of an exceptionally talented and influential Virginian, Turner Lewis Foddrell; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Turner Lewis Foddrell as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his manifold contributions to the musical heritage of the Commonwealth and the nation.
