HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 717
On the death of C. Coleman McGehee.

WHEREAS, C. Coleman McGehee, a prominent Richmond banker who was well known for his many community service activities, died on February 12, 1995; and

WHEREAS, a native of Franklin who grew up in Hopewell, Coleman McGehee was a decorated veteran of World War II, where he saw action at Utah Beach on D-Day, then fought in France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Holland, emerging with a Bronze Star, four battle stars, and a combat infantry badge; and

WHEREAS, resuming his education after the war, Coleman McGehee graduated from the University of Virginia in 1947, then began his career with First & Merchants National Bank in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Coleman McGehee became president of First & Merchants; when that bank merged with Virginia National Bank in 1983, he became president and chief operating officer of Sovran Financial Corporation and Sovran Bank, N.A., in 1986, he was named chairman of Sovran Bank, a position he held until his retirement in 1989; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement, Coleman McGehee pursued a lifelong love of history and earned a master's degree in history from the University of Richmond in 1992; and

WHEREAS, Coleman McGehee's love of history and education led him to the Virginia Historical Society, which he served as president; the United Negro College Fund, which he served as state treasurer; and St. Christopher's School, the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, the Richmond Symphony, and the Boys Club of Richmond, all of which he served as a member of the board; and

WHEREAS, Coleman McGehee was past president of the Virginia Bankers Association, served as a member of the Governor's Business Advisory Committee for 16 years, and was chairman of the Finance Advisory Committee to the Governor's Commission on Virginia Transportation in the 21st Century; and

WHEREAS, among the countless honors accorded Coleman McGehee were the 1957 Richmond Young Man of the Year Award from the Richmond Junior Chamber of Commerce and the 1986 Brotherhood Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews; and

WHEREAS, a man of great accomplishment and devotion to the citizens of Richmond and the Commonwealth, Coleman McGehee leaves a peerless legacy of service to his community, his state, and his nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of an outstanding Virginian, C. Coleman McGehee; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of C. Coleman McGehee as an expression of the high esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
