1995 SESSION
WHEREAS, Dr. Walter Lawrence, Jr., Professor of Surgery and former Chairman of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University, has announced his retirement; and
WHEREAS, a native of Chicago, Dr. Lawrence was educated at Dartmouth College and the University of Chicago and obtained his surgical training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; and
WHEREAS, following service during the Korean War as Chief of Surgery at the 46th Army Surgical Hospital, Dr. Lawrence returned to the staff of Memorial Sloan-Kettering until he joined MCV in 1966, holding several leadership positions at MCV, including Executive Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Director of the Massey Cancer Center; and
WHEREAS, an internationally renowned expert in surgical oncology, Dr. Lawrence has published widely in the field and has served in a variety of roles with such organizations as the American Board of Surgery, the National Cancer Advisory Board, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American College of Surgeons, and many others as well as being the former National President of the American Cancer Society; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lawrence's awards over the years include the 1964 Alfred P. Sloan Award in Cancer Research, the 1973 J. Shelton Horsley Award of the American Cancer Society, and Distinguished Service Awards from the University of Chicago and the Medical College of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, throughout his nearly three-decade tenure at MCV, Dr. Walter Lawrence has served the medical community and the citizens of Virginia with great distinction, with consummate skill, and with unparalleled professionalism; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Dr. Walter Lawrence, Jr., for his career of extraordinary dedication, commitment, and accomplishment; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. Walter Lawrence, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for his countless and invaluable contributions to the health of the citizens of the Commonwealth.
