HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 703
On the death of Robert K. Cunningham.

WHEREAS, Robert K. Cunningham, a highly decorated 25-year veteran of the United States Army and a five-term member of the House of Delegates, died on December 26, 1994; and

WHEREAS, a native of Nashville, Tennessee, Robert Cunningham attended the University of Minnesota, before World War II interrupted his education; and

WHEREAS, during the war, Robert Cunningham commanded an armored infantry battalion that saw action in France and Belgium and was part of General Patton's army at the Battle of the Bulge in 1944; and

WHEREAS, during his 25-year career, Colonel Cunningham also participated in combat operations in Korea and Vietnam and was awarded two Bronze Stars, a Legion of Merit, a Distinguished Flying Cross, 10 Air Medals, a Combat Infantryman's Badge, and many other citations during his Army service; and

WHEREAS, while in the Army, Robert Cunningham earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and a master's degree in foreign affairs from George Washington University; and

WHEREAS, a resident of Northern Virginia since 1965, Robert Cunningham was elected to the House of Delegates in 1983 from the 42nd House District and represented the citizens of southern Fairfax for 10 years, until his retirement following the 1993 Session; and

WHEREAS, during his decade of service, Robert Cunningham served on the House Committees on Finance, General Laws, Agriculture, and Nominations and Confirmations; and

WHEREAS, Robert K. Cunningham was a founder and ruling elder of the Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in Springfield and gave generously of his time to the Boy Scouts and the Little League; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an honorable, respected, and accomplished Virginian, Robert K. Cunningham; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert K. Cunningham as an expression of the General Assembly's abiding respect for his life of service to his community, the Commonwealth, and the nation.
