WHEREAS, the Honorable Margaret Thatcher rose from humble beginnings to serve as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 until 1990, inspiring in her beloved country the pride, vigor, and strength that has characterized Great Britain for centuries; and

WHEREAS, Margaret Thatcher's determination, will, and leadership brought her nation victory in the Falkland Islands in 1982; and

WHEREAS, her deep and lasting friendship with the United States rekindled the special relationship between the two countries that is so important to the growth and strength of democracy around the world; and

WHEREAS, Margaret Thatcher's steadfastness was an essential element in the end of the Cold War, the destruction of the Iron Curtain, and the historic changes that have taken place in Europe during the 1990s; and

WHEREAS, throughout her 33 years in the Parliament and her 11 years as Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher demonstrated the virtues and values, the character and courage, the dignity and determination, the strength and stamina, and the honor and honesty that characterize great world leaders; and

WHEREAS, in December 1990, Margaret Thatcher was awarded the Order of Merit by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, and on June 30, 1992, she was elevated to the House of Lords to become Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly offer its warmest welcome to the Honorable Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Chancellor of the College of William and Mary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly hereby proclaim February 3, 1995, a day of appreciation for the unique contributions and accomplishments of this most distinguished visitor to the Commonwealth, the Honorable Margaret Thatcher; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Margaret, the Lady Thatcher, O.M., P.C., F.R.S., as an expression of the General Assembly's great respect for her life of service to the people of the United Kingdom and the world.
