1995 SESSION
WHEREAS, Nelson B. Harris, a prominent York County civic activist and volunteer, died on October 14, 1994; and
WHEREAS, a native of Indiana and an Air Force veteran of World War II, Nelson Harris had been a resident of the Peninsula since 1945; and
WHEREAS, exceptionally active in York County political and civic affairs, Nelson Harris was well known and highly respected for his tireless efforts on behalf of the citizens of York County; and
WHEREAS, Nelson Harris created Yorktown's enormously successful Fourth of July festivities during the 1970s, helped to build the Waterman's Museum in Yorktown, organized the christening of the U.S.S. Yorktown, and was primarily responsible for the re-illumination of the Yorktown Monument, which had been dark since World War II; and
WHEREAS, equally well known for his political activities, Nelson Harris provided invaluable assistance to many York-area candidates for public office; and
WHEREAS, Nelson Harris also volunteered his time on behalf of the York County Ruritan Club, the American Cancer Society, and the American Heart Association; and
WHEREAS, in one or another of his many volunteer activities, Nelson Harris touched and improved the lives of virtually every resident of York County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a fine Virginian, Nelson B. Harris; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Nelson B. Harris as an expression of the great respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of York County.
