WHEREAS, last fall, members of the General Assembly and their families were afforded the opportunity to travel across the Commonwealth on a unique excursion train, the “Highland Express,” which consisted of two locomotives and several vintage railway cars; and
WHEREAS, originating in Norfolk, the train traveled to Radford on November 18, 1994, with stops in Petersburg, Appomattox, Lynchburg, and Roanoke, and made the return journey on November 20; and
WHEREAS, the train, sponsored by the Norfolk Southern Corporation, was an integral part of the “Commonwealth Day” festivities in Blacksburg, centered on the annual Virginia Tech-University of Virginia football game; and
WHEREAS, upon arrival in Radford, General Assembly members were greeted with dinner and a reception on the Radford University campus; and
WHEREAS, the efforts of Norfolk Southern and Radford University contributed substantially to the success of the Commonwealth Day weekend; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly express its appreciation to the Norfolk Southern Corporation and the Radford University National Alumni Association for their sponsorship of the “Highland Express”; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly extend special appreciation to W. Bruce Wingo and Susan D. Bland of Norfolk Southern Corporation and Charlotte M. Hawes and Meredith L. Strohm of Radford University for their invaluable assistance; and, be it
RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to David R. Goode, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer, and John R. Turbyfill, Vice Chairman, Norfolk Southern Corporation; Dr. Charles Owens, Acting President of Radford University; and J. Randal Duncan, President of the Radford University National Alumni Association, as expressions of the General Assembly’s appreciation for the success of the “Highland Express.”
