HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 679
Commending T. Melvin Butler.

WHEREAS, T. Melvin Butler has given many years of invaluable service to the City of Hampton, serving a total of 16 years on the City Council, including 10 years as Vice Mayor; and

WHEREAS, initially elected in 1976, T. Melvin Butler served a four-year term on the City Council and returned, following a two-year hiatus, to serve three more terms, from 1982 through 1994; and

WHEREAS, T. Melvin Butler played an instrumental role in many of the changes and improvements to the City during his tenure, including the Steam Plant, the Charles Taylor Library, the Hampton Arts Center, the Virginia Air and Space Center, the Hampton Roads History Center, the Youth Coalition, and the revitalization of downtown; and

WHEREAS, T. Melvin Butler also effectively represented the City of Hampton on many local, regional, and statewide boards, committees, and commissions; and

WHEREAS, T. Melvin Butler has also found time to contribute generously of his energy and talent to a wide range of local organizations, including the Hampton Girls Club, the Thomas Nelson Community College Board, the American Heart Association, the United Way, and the Peninsula Association for Retarded Citizens; and

WHEREAS, T. Melvin Butler has been cited frequently for his civic and charitable activities by, among others, the Secretary of the Army, the Hampton Roads Exchange Club, the National Council of Christians and Jews, and Hampton University; and

WHEREAS, throughout his career in public service, T. Melvin Butler has set a high standard of integrity, selflessness, and dedication to the citizens of Hampton, the Peninsula, and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend T. Melvin Butler for his exemplary career of service to the City of Hampton; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to T. Melvin Butler as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for his remarkable efforts on behalf of his fellow citizens.
