WHEREAS, on June 17, 1994, the Tunstall High School baseball team defeated Tabb High School, 3-2, to win the Virginia High School League Group AA state baseball championship; and
WHEREAS, the victory capped a perfect season for the Trojans from Tunstall High School, as they finished the 1994 season with a perfect 18-0 district record and a 26-0 overall record; and
WHEREAS, in bringing home to Pittsylvania County Tunstall’s second state baseball title, the Trojans’ seniors, led by co-captains Bubba Scarce, Mark Inge, Johnny Walden, and Khris Law, ended three years of frustration by winning the coveted state championship; and
WHEREAS, Head Coach Owen Shields’ Trojans, after completing a perfect regular season, swept past Chatham High School, Patrick County High School, and Magna Vista High School to win the district title; and
WHEREAS, by defeating Brookville High School and William Byrd High School, the Trojans won the regional crown and advanced to the state quarterfinals, where they shut out Gate City High School, 5-0; and
WHEREAS, the Trojans defeated William Byrd again, 6-4, to advance to the state title game against Tabb High School, a tense contest that was not decided until the last Tabb batter struck out on a 3-2 pitch with two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning; and
WHEREAS, the victory by the Tunstall baseball team is a tribute to the dedication of the players, the skills of the coaching staff, and the unflagging support of the students, faculty, parents, and many community supporters of Tunstall High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Trojans of Tunstall High School on their extraordinary 1994 baseball season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Owen Shields in honor of the championship performance of the Tunstall High School baseball team.
