WHEREAS, on April 21, 1995, the Germanna Community College in Orange County will honor former Congressman D. French Slaughter, Jr., by naming its building after him; and

WHEREAS, before his retirement from the United States Congress, French Slaughter compiled a sterling record of service to the citizens of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, a decorated veteran of World War II and a graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Virginia School of Law, French Slaughter served for 20 years in the General Assembly and was the chief patron of the Community College Act of 1966, which established Virginia’s statewide community college system; and

WHEREAS, elected to Congress in 1984, French Slaughter represented the citizens of the 7th Congressional District with great vigor, integrity, and distinction; and

WHEREAS, long concerned about the swelling federal deficit, French Slaughter fought to reduce the deficit and was recognized six times by the nonpartisan Watchdogs of the Treasury for his deficit-reduction votes; and

WHEREAS, serving on the House Committees on the Judiciary, on Science, Space and Technology, and on Small Business, French Slaughter was an advocate of health care reform, sponsoring the Health Care Savings Account Act; was the patron of a bill to provide merit scholarships for the study of science and engineering; and was a three-time winner of the Guardian of Small Business Award, presented every two years by the National Federation of Independent Business; and

WHEREAS, throughout his legislative career, in the General Assembly and in the Congress, French Slaughter well represented the interests of his constituents and the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the naming of the Germanna Community College building after D. French Slaughter, Jr., one of the founders of the Virginia Community College system, is an entirely appropriate means of honoring Congressman Slaughter’s dedicated service to the Commonwealth and the nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend D. French Slaughter, Jr., and join with the students, faculty, and administration of Germanna Community College in honoring his manifold contributions to Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to D. French Slaughter, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations on this most appropriate and well-deserved honor; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a second copy of this resolution for presentation to Germanna Community College to be displayed in the library of the college in honor of D. French Slaughter, Jr.
