WHEREAS, in 1720, the County of Hanover was formed from New Kent County and named for the Electorate of Hanover, Germany, the seat of King George I, who had gained the English throne in 1714; and

WHEREAS, Hanover County had been settled by planters and plantation owners well before its founding and, located between the Chickahominy and Pamunkey Rivers, was the home of a bustling port at Hanover Town; and

WHEREAS, home to Patrick Henry, who was born, practiced law, and lived most of his life in the County, Hanover also saw Lord Cornwallis stopping at Hanover Tavern on his way to his unfortunate experience at Yorktown (and failing to pay his bill), closely followed by his tormentor, George Washington, who paid for his stay at the tavern; and

WHEREAS, during this same period, General Lafayette traversed Hanover County several times, the Compt de Rochambeau marched through Hanover Courthouse on his way to join Washington at Yorktown, and Dolly Madison was a resident of the County; and

WHEREAS, located only a few miles north of Richmond, a target of Union forces, Hanover County played a prominent role in the Civil War, as home to Edmund Ruffin, who fired the first shot at Fort Sumpter, and as the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of the War -- Cold Harbor, Gaines Mill, Seven Days, North Anna, and Hanover Courthouse; and

WHEREAS, the Hanover County of the 1990s is a vibrant, growing, and prosperous mix of rural and suburban areas, including the suburbs of the metropolitan Richmond area, the historic Town of Ashland, and many rich agricultural areas; and

WHEREAS, anchored by a strong and growing industrial base, a growing population of nearly 70,000, an excellent public school system, and one of the lowest tax rates in the Richmond area, historic Hanover County celebrates its 275th anniversary and confidently moves toward the 21st Century; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Hanover County on the occasion of the 275th anniversary of its founding; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors in honor of this milestone anniversary of one of the Commonwealth’s most historic communities.
