HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 673
On the death of Audrey K. Walker.

WHEREAS, Audrey K. Walker, the founder of the Hampton Woman's Service League and a prominent community activist, died on September 19, 1994; and

WHEREAS, a native of Hampton, Audrey Walker graduated from Phenix High School and earned her bachelor of science and master of arts degrees from Hampton Institute, now Hampton University; and

WHEREAS, over 50 years ago, Audrey Walker founded the Hampton Woman's Service League, dedicated to such community services as donating milk to nursery schools, providing free lunches for elementary school children, and holding an annual Christmas social for teenagers; and

WHEREAS, a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Audrey Walker also served as city, district, and state president of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs, and in 1975, she was named Woman of the Year by the State Federation of Colored Women's Clubs; and

WHEREAS, in 1969, Audrey Walker was honored by the National Council of Women with the Outstanding Community Service Certificate; and

WHEREAS, in 1970, Audrey Walker was appointed by Governor Linwood Holton to the Commission on the Status of Women in Virginia, and in 1974, she was appointed to the Task Force on Volunteerism for the Virginia Department of Corrections; and

WHEREAS, throughout her active and productive life, Audrey Walker gave generously of her time, talents, and boundless energy on behalf of countless community service organizations, to the ultimate benefit of the citizens of Hampton, the Peninsula, and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of a singularly dedicated, selfless, and accomplished Virginian, Audrey K. Walker; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Audrey K. Walker as an expression of the high esteem in which her life of community service is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
