LD5430148WHEREAS, Reverend Howard V. Booker, Sr., pastor of the Antioch Baptist Church in Hampton for 22 years and a forceful voice against crime and social injustice in the community, died on October 18, 1994; and
WHEREAS, a native of Buckingham County and a veteran of service in the United States Air Force, Howard Booker was ordained in February 1972 at Lincoln Park Baptist Church in Hampton and was appointed pastor of Antioch Baptist Church later that year; and
WHEREAS, committed to eradicating social problems in his neighborhood, Reverend Booker organized drives to rid Hampton communities of crime and drug trafficking; and
WHEREAS, president for two years of the Hampton Ministers Coalition, Reverend Booker organized “The March of Jericho,” a series of marches through neighborhoods plagued by crime and drugs; and
WHEREAS, a man of forceful personality and passionate beliefs, Reverend Howard Booker worked strenuously to improve the lives of his parishioners, to clean up the neighborhoods they lived in, and to serve the city they were part of; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the loss of Reverend Howard V. Booker, Sr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Reverend Howard V. Booker, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
