HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 671 On the death of Rieves S. Hodnett, Sr.

WHEREAS, Rieves S. Hodnett, Sr., a prominent Martinsville businessman and former Mayor of the City of Martinsville, died on January 6, 1995; and

WHEREAS, a native of Martinsville, Rieves Hodnett graduated from Martinsville High School in 1922, attended Virginia Military Institute, and graduated from the Insurance Institute of America before embarking on a career in the insurance industry that spanned more than 40 years; and

WHEREAS, Rieves Hodnett served on the Martinsville City Council, served as Mayor of Martinsville from 1952 to 1956, and was for 28 years the chairman of the Martinsville Democratic Party; and

WHEREAS, long active in community affairs in the Martinsville area, Rieves Hodnett served on the board of the Patrick Henry Branch of the University of Virginia in the 1960s and was chairman of the board of Patrick Henry Community College from 1971 to 1984; and

WHEREAS, Rieves Hodnett was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce of Martinsville-Henry County, was a member of the General George Waller Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and, at the request of the late Governor Thomas B. Stanley, organized citizens to form what became the Piedmont Arts Association; and

WHEREAS, a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, Rieves Hodnett served as chairman of the board of trustees, chairman of the board of deacons, and was a 70-year member of the Sanctuary Choir; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of a devoted citizen of Martinsville, Rieves S. Hodnett, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Rieves S. Hodnett, Sr., as an expression of the high esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
