1995 SESSION
LD5435152WHEREAS, Ramon Earl Luffman, Danville’s national checkers champion, died on January 11, 1995; and
WHEREAS, Earl Luffman began playing checkers nearly a half-century ago, when he learned the game by watching people play at his father's store, Luffman's Grocery; and
WHEREAS, well-known around the Danville area for his prowess, Earl Luffman for years visited local country stores, seeking matches against the best local players; and
WHEREAS, about eight years ago, Earl Luffman began entering checkers tournaments, beginning at the bottom of the rankings of checkers players and slowly and steadily moving up; and
WHEREAS, ranked among the top two-dozen players in the country, Earl Luffman reached the pinnacle of his career in August 1994, when he won the American Checker Federation's U.S. National Major Division Checker Championship in Dallas; and
WHEREAS, Earl Luffman also won the designation of Master Player, indicating that he is one of the best players in the country; and
WHEREAS, as devoted to his church as he was to the game of checkers, Earl Luffman was a longtime member of the Baptist Tabernacle Church, to which he contributed many hours of his time on a wide variety of projects; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of Ramon Earl Luffman; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ramon Earl Luffman as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
