WHEREAS, the deleterious effects of excessive television viewing on the nation’s youth have been intensively studied and frequently debated; and

WHEREAS, the recent development and expansion of cable television networks have intensified the debate, with some studies showing far greater incidence of violence on cable television than on commercial networks; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers promotes responsible television viewing and suggests alternatives to television viewing in an effort to mitigate the effects of unrestricted television viewing among young people; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers has created a campaign to involve families, through their local PTA organizations, in encouraging responsible viewing of television and in suggesting alternative family activities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate the week of February 12-18, 1995, as PTA Family Alternative to Television Week in Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly call upon the citizens of the Commonwealth to support this worthy initiative by the PTA and to become involved with family activities that do not involve watching television.
