HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 574 Proclaiming June 10, 1995, as Clean the Bay Day.

WHEREAS, the Chesapeake Bay is a source of food and income for many Virginians, and responsible use of its waters and resources is basic to the survival of future generations; and

WHEREAS, the Bay is a source of enormous ecological value, beauty, recreation, inspiration, and enjoyment; and

WHEREAS, Clean the Bay Day, Inc., created in 1989, has grown in six years into an annual volunteer effort involving thousands of Virginia citizens; and

WHEREAS, in cooperation with the Center for Marine Conservation, the purpose of the project is to contribute toward a cleaner, safer, more beautiful environment; and

WHEREAS, in 1994, nearly 3,000 Clean the Bay Day volunteers collected 100 tons of debris, increasing the six-year total collection to 470 tons of debris; and

WHEREAS, because of the volunteer efforts of Clean the Bay Day, the shorelines in all of the participating communities are notably cleaner and safer, and life-threatening hazards to marine life have been removed; and

WHEREAS, in addition to collecting trash, Clean the Bay Day volunteers carefully catalog the debris to determine its source, to use the data for environmental education programs, and to measure the effectiveness of legislation aimed at controlling such pollution; and

WHEREAS, as a result of its efforts, Clean the Bay Day has been cited numerous times by, among others, the President of the United States, the General Assembly of Virginia, the Governor of Virginia, and the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That June 10, 1995, be proclaimed Clean the Bay Day; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly highly commend the praiseworthy efforts of Clean the Bay Day, Inc., and call upon the citizens of the Commonwealth to observe this day and to resolve not to add further to the pollution of this most valuable natural resource; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit copies of this resolution to the legislatures and the environmental and recreation agencies of the District of Columbia and the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware so that their citizens may be invited to participate in Clean the Bay Day on June 10, 1995.
