HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 572
Designating the first week of May as Safe Kids Week in Virginia.

WHEREAS, each year nearly 7,200 of America's children die from unintentional injuries and an additional 50,000 are permanently disabled; and

WHEREAS, the National Safe Kids Campaign promotes childhood injury prevention by uniting diverse groups into local and state coalitions, developing innovative educational tools and strategies, initiating public policy changes, promoting new technology, and raising awareness through the media; and

WHEREAS, in Virginia, local groups are working to promote greater use of helmets by bicyclists to prevent many of the deaths and serious head injuries suffered by young Virginians in bicycle accidents; and

WHEREAS, the National Safe Kids Campaign has launched an initiative to unite forces with such local efforts and other childhood injury prevention activists to reach countless homes with vital child safety information; and

WHEREAS, beginning in 1995, National Safe Kids Week will include a national public awareness campaign; distribution of millions of pieces of safety information at schools, community events, and retail outlets; and outreach to thousands of community leaders and organizations; and

WHEREAS, hundreds of communities nationwide will be conducting childhood injury prevention activities around the theme of Safe Kids Check America during National Safe Kids Week; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate the week of May 6-13, 1995, and the first week of May in each year thereafter, as Safe Kids Week in Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly call upon the citizens of the Commonwealth to support this most worthy effort to protect the lives and well-being of Virginia's children with appropriate childhood accident-prevention activities.
