1995 SESSION
WHEREAS, throughout 1995, the Arlington Symphony Orchestra will be celebrating its 50th anniversary of service to the Arlington community; and
WHEREAS, originated in 1945 by a group of musicians from the wartime War Production Board Orchestra, the Arlington Symphony has grown over its half-century of existence into a vital part of the cultural life of Arlington; and
WHEREAS, led by a succession of distinguished musicians, the Arlington Symphony has maintained close ties with the Arlington Public Schools, finding homes through the years at Kenmore and Jefferson Middle Schools and Washington Lee High School; and
WHEREAS, in many of its programs, the Arlington Symphony Orchestra focuses on the youth of Arlington, including the Youth Scholarship Competition, free concerts, summer music camps for students in middle and high school, and an apprentice program for outstanding student musicians; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington Symphony, with the help of its 50th season sponsor, the Allbritton Foundation, has added two new programs -- donating videotapes of concerts to area libraries and establishing "Close Encounters with an Orchestra" for middle-school students and their families; and
WHEREAS, through its excellent musicianship, its consistent involvement with the community, and its emphasis on Arlington's youth, the Arlington Symphony Orchestra has become a vital, growing, and essential part of life in Arlington; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Arlington Symphony Orchestra on the occasion of its golden anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Maestro Ruben Vartanyan, music director and conductor, as an expression of the General Assembly's best wishes for the continued success of the Arlington Symphony Orchestra.
