1995 SESSION
WHEREAS, Dr. John David French, a Martinsville pediatrician, founder of the Children's Medical Center, and a prominent and effective civic leader in the Martinsville-Henry County community, died on December 3, 1994; and
WHEREAS, a native of West Virginia and a U.S. Navy veteran, Dr. French arrived in Martinsville in 1957, after earning his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, the only board-certified specialist in the community when he arrived, Dr. French treated as many as three generations of Martinsville-Henry County families during his nearly four decades of practice; and
WHEREAS, a man dedicated to his profession, his patients, and his community when he arrived, Dr. French was a member of a wide variety of professional organizations, served as chairman of the Martinsville-Henry County Drug Task Force, and assisted in the development of the Henry County-Martinsville Health Department and the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County; and
WHEREAS, Dr. French was also an active and influential member of the Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce, which awarded him its President's Award in 1985, honoring his outstanding contributions to the Traffic and Transportation Committee; and
WHEREAS, his civic leadership notwithstanding, it is as a caring, compassionate, and highly skilled physician that Dr. John French will be remembered, and generations of healthy young citizens of the community represent his most lasting and significant legacy; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an irreplaceable member of the Martinsville community, Dr. John David French; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. John David French as an expression of the high esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
