LD2688114WHEREAS, Thomas James Burch, a prominent Martinsville businessman and former city councilman, died on October 14, 1994; and
WHEREAS, born in Roanoke in 1909, Thomas Burch moved to Henry County in the 1930s, when he established T. J. Burch and Company, a real estate and insurance business; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Burch's business career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in Germany as a member of the 113th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, advancing to the rank of first lieutenant; and
WHEREAS, returning to the Martinsville area after the war, Thomas Burch resumed his career, became involved in local politics, and was elected to two terms on the Martinsville City Council; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Burch, who also served as chairman of the Martinsville Zoning Board of Appeals and as the second president of the Martinsville-Henry County Real Estate Board, was awarded the Beducian-Gusler Community Service Award by the Martinsville-Henry County Home Builders Association; and
WHEREAS, throughout his long and active career, Thomas Burch gave generously of his time, energy, and talents to the betterment of the Martinsville-Henry County community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of an influential citizen of Martinsville and a fine Virginian, Thomas James Burch; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Thomas James Burch in honor of his lifetime of service to the citizens of Martinsville, Henry County, and the Commonwealth.
