HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 457 On the death of Edward Monroe Allen, Sr.

WHEREAS, Edward Monroe Allen, Sr., a New Kent outdoorsman, prominent entrepreneur and businessman, died on November 15, 1994; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of New Kent County and a 1943 graduate of New Kent High School, Ed Allen served in the United States Navy during World War II; and

WHEREAS, the founder of Ed Allen's Campground in Lanexa, Ed Allen began this enterprise over 45 years ago with only a single boat to rent; and

WHEREAS, with the help of his family and especially his wife Louise, Ed Allen gradually expanded his fledgling boat livery by buying and developing adjoining land, opening the Lakeside Restaurant, and developing the campground in the mid-1950s that was to make his name well known to travelers throughout the east coast; and

WHEREAS, Ed Allen's Campground was developed as a family resort, with outdoor activities available for children and adults, with a friendly, family atmosphere, and with an ideal location close to other tourist attractions; and

WHEREAS, Ed Allen's Campground stands as a lasting legacy to the vision, the foresight, and the hard work of its founder; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of a uniquely successful and respected Virginian, Edward Monroe Allen, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Edward Monroe Allen, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
