HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 443
Commending the Appalachia High School football team.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 20, 1995
Agreed to by the Senate, January 26, 1995

WHEREAS, the Appalachia High School football team avenged a disappointing loss in the 1993 state championship game by destroying the defending champions from Middlesex High School, 72-7, in the 1994 title game; and

WHEREAS, in winning their fourth state title, and their third in the past six years, the Bulldogs from Appalachia capped a 12-2 season with the 1994 Virginia High School League, Group A, Division 1 championship; and

WHEREAS, the Bulldogs' victory returned the Division 1 title to Southwest Virginia and completed a sweep of Group A trophies for the Lonesome Pine District; and

WHEREAS, setting a scoring record in the championship game, the Bulldogs exploded on offense, scoring 32 points in the second quarter, and dominated on defense, allowing Middlesex only six first downs in the first half, and none in the second; and

WHEREAS, led by a raft of all-district and all-region players and guided by the talent and inspiration of Head Coach Tom Turner, the Bulldogs of Appalachia High School earned a satisfying victory and added another chapter to the already rich tradition of high school football in Southwest Virginia; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Bulldogs of Appalachia High School on their exceptional 1994 season and state championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Tom Turner in honor of the championship performance of the Appalachia High School football team.
