1995 SESSION
WHEREAS, on December 10, 1994, the Vikings football team from Powell Valley High School captured the Virginia High School League, Group A, Division 2 state championship with a convincing 33-12 victory over previously unbeaten Sussex Central High School; and
WHEREAS, the Vikings' 1994 championship was the fifth state title for Powell Valley High School, in Big Stone Gap, and gave the Lonesome Pine District a sweep of Group A state football championships; and
WHEREAS, led by record-setting tailback Thomas Jones, who scored four touchdowns and rushed for 215 yards in the title game, the Vikings controlled the game from the start and won with a dominant ground attack and a stout, hard-hitting defense; and
WHEREAS, the Vikings, after beginning the 1994 season with two losses in three games, came on strong to win the Lonesome Pine District championship and the state title; and
WHEREAS, Head Coach Phil Robbins, the Division 2 Coach of the Year, led the Powell Valley Vikings to a 12-2 record and a well-earned state championship; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly salute the Vikings for continuing the rich football tradition at Powell Valley High School by winning the 1994 state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Phil Robbins in honor of the championship performance of the Powell Valley High School football team.
