HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 440
Commending George E. "Buddy" Russell.

WHEREAS, George E. "Buddy" Russell, the Vice President for Alumni Relations at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, has announced his retirement; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Virginia Tech, with graduate degrees from the University of Maryland and the University of Wisconsin, Buddy Russell has devoted nearly 40 years of his life to Virginia Tech, first in the Extension Division and then, for the past 27 years, with the Alumni Association; and

WHEREAS, Buddy Russell's postdoctoral study has included work at the University of Tennessee, the University of Chicago, and the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, while with the Extension Division at Virginia Tech, Buddy Russell served as Director of Resource Development, leader of the Home Economics Extension Program, and member of the state 4-H Club staff; and

WHEREAS, Buddy Russell has served as Director of Alumni Affairs, as Executive Director and Executive Vice President of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, and as a University Vice President for Alumni Relations; and

WHEREAS, Buddy Russell has published many articles in extension and alumni publications, has been a popular speaker at district and national conferences of various professional organizations, and has been active in such groups as the Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce, the Blacksburg Sports Club, the University Club, and the Voluntary Action Center; and

WHEREAS, Buddy Russell has also been an active member of the Christiansburg-Blacksburg Rotary Club, serving in almost all leadership positions at the local and district levels; and

WHEREAS, throughout his nearly four decades of service to Virginia Tech and the Blacksburg community, Buddy Russell has been an irreplaceable resource whose many contributions to past and present students of Virginia Tech will be sorely missed; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend George E. "Buddy" Russell for his many years of exemplary service to the students, staff, and alumni of Virginia Tech; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly join with the countless friends, colleagues, and admirers of Buddy Russell in wishing him a long, fruitful, and enjoyable retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to George E. "Buddy" Russell in honor of his extraordinary dedication to the continued success of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
