HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 434 Commending the University of Virginia men's soccer team.

WHEREAS, on December 11, 1994, the University of Virginia Cavaliers won their unprecedented fourth consecutive NCAA Division I national soccer championship; and

WHEREAS, overcoming early season predictions of their demise and the loss of one of their best players, the Cavaliers prevailed over the favored Hoosiers of the University of Indiana, 1-0, to secure their fourth straight national title and their fifth in the past six years; and

WHEREAS, the Cavaliers' seniors -- A. J. Wood, Clint Peay, Nate Friends, and Tain Nix -- have never lost in NCAA tournament play; and

WHEREAS, entering the tournament as the defending national champion, Virginia was ranked only fifth in the country and had to overcome conventional wisdom, which said that the Cavaliers had slipped from their title-winning form of the past three years; and

WHEREAS, by defeating Rutgers, 2-1, in the semifinals, then Indiana in the final, the Cavaliers convinced the skeptics, rewarded their supporters, and reaffirmed their dominance of collegiate soccer; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the University of Virginia men's soccer team on its extraordinary 1994 national championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Bruce Arena in honor of the sterling achievements of the Cavaliers -- truly the team of the 1990s.
