1995 SESSION
LD3002208WHEREAS, the Spotsylvania High School football team completed a remarkable 1994 season by winning the Virginia High School League Group AA, Division 4 championship; and
WHEREAS, the Knights from Spotsylvania High School, who finished fourth in the Battlefield District with three losses during the regular season and barely made the field for the playoffs, were given little chance to advance to the championship; and
WHEREAS, Head Coach Tim Coleman’s Knights defied conventional wisdom by defeating powerful Charlottesville High School in the District II title game; and
WHEREAS, the Knights then defeated Nansemond River High School in the state semi-final game to set up a title game against heavily favored and previously undefeated Amherst County High School; and
WHEREAS, dominant in all phases of the game, Spotsylvania relied on its excellent defense, outstanding special teams play, and a surprisingly efficient passing attack to shut-out the Lancers from Amherst County, 26-0; and
WHEREAS, in winning their second state title in four years, the Knights overcame a shaky start and reveled in their unaccustomed role of underdog in the playoffs to convincingly defeat highly regarded opponents, a tribute to fine coaching, brilliant teamwork, and a never-say-die spirit; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly salute the Knights of Spotsylvania High School on their well-earned and immensely satisfying state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Tim Coleman in honor of the championship performance of the Spotsylvania High School football team.
