1995 SESSION
LD5770388WHEREAS, excessive and unnecessary packaging of products consumed in Virginia increases the amount of waste materials disposed of in landfills; and
WHEREAS, voluntary reductions in the waste stream of superfluous wrapping and other packaging materials will extend the useful life of landfills in the Commonwealth and reduce a source of litter; and
WHEREAS, the Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards Program has recognized environmental protection efforts which address a demonstrable need, are replicable by others, constitute an important innovation, and reflect an ongoing commitment to stewardship of the environment; and
WHEREAS, the public recognition resulting from the receipt of a Governor's Environmental Excellence Award provides an incentive for actions that will benefit the environment of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, publicly recognizing successful efforts by product packagers, manufacturers, and retailers to reduce the amount of materials in which products are packaged will encourage measures to eliminate wasteful packaging practices; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the Governor be requested to recognize, as a component of the Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards Program, successful efforts to reduce the use of wasteful packaging in the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Governor consult with the Secretary of Natural Resources for assistance in identifying those product packagers, manufacturers, and retailers who have achieved the greatest success in revising the packaging of their products so as to reduce the amount of packaging waste generated in the Commonwealth.
