Commending the James Madison University field hockey team.

WHEREAS, on November 20, 1994, the James Madison University field hockey team won the NCAA Division I national championship, the first NCAA championship in the university’s history; and

WHEREAS, the Dukes from James Madison won the title by defeating a team from the University of North Carolina that had beaten Madison handily only a month earlier; and

WHEREAS, led by their four All-Tournament players and relying on an extremely stingy defense, the Dukes defeated Northwestern University, 1-0, in the semifinals to gain a rematch with North Carolina in the championship game; and

WHEREAS, James Madison’s thrilling 2-1 victory in the title game, which was decided in the third overtime period, capped a triumphant season in which the Dukes won 20 of 24 games; and

WHEREAS, led by the inspired coaching of Christy Morgan, a former member of the U.S. Olympic team, the 1994 Dukes completed a remarkable turnaround from a 6-13 record to a national championship in only two years; and

WHEREAS, the outstanding success of the James Madison University field hockey team stands as a tribute to the talent and determination of the players, the skill and dedication of the coaching staff, and the support of the James Madison community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the James Madison University field hockey team on its unprecedented victory; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Christy Morgan in honor of the championship performance of the James Madison University field hockey team.
