1995 SESSION
LD5387322WHEREAS, by Act of the General Assembly, on December 19, 1794, the Town of Jonesville was founded as the county seat of Lee County, itself created only two years previously; and
WHEREAS, established on a 55-acre site donated by Frederick Jones, Jonesville, known until then as Glade Springs, had already established a substantial historical heritage; and
WHEREAS, in the early and mid-18th century, hunters had explored the areas around Jonesville, finding and naming such areas as Wind Springs, Glade Springs, and Sinking Springs, and in 1775, Daniel Boone led a group of trailblazers straight through Glade Springs on his way to the Cumberland Gap and points west; and
WHEREAS, in 1776, many forts had been established along the Holston, Clinch, and Powell Rivers in Southwestern Virginia, including Monk’s Fort, located at Glade Springs, and during his three trips to Kentucky over the next three years, George Rogers Clark was a guest at Monk’s Fort in what is now Jonesville; and
WHEREAS, from a small town, established by men named Jones, Ewing, Campbell, Chadwell, Young, Sharp, Fulkerson, Hicks, Blackmore, and Cockrell, Jonesville grew through the early nineteenth century, until in 1836, it reported a population of 196, living in 40 dwelling houses and served by one church, one school, one doctor, one lawyer, four stores, and four blacksmith shops; and
WHEREAS, Jonesville also played a role in the Civil War, when in 1864, General William E. Jones defeated a Union force, capturing the battalion; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Jonesville was incorporated in 1834, was reincorporated in 1901, and is today a community of nearly 1,000 Virginians, living proudly in the westernmost county seat in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, many of the current residents of the Jonesville can trace their lineage back to those original settlers and founders of the town; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Town of Jonesville on the occasion of its bicentennial celebration; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Town of Jonesville in honor of its two centuries of proud history and in recognition of its vital and continuing role in Lee County and Southwest Virginia.
