WHEREAS, Lieutenant Brenda Lundy, of the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Department, was named Deputy of the Year by the Virginia Sheriff’s Association; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the coveted Deputy of the Year Award, Brenda Lundy was the recipient of the Michael Bentoski Memorial Award for her lifetime achievements in promoting the D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program; and

WHEREAS, a native of North Carolina, Brenda Lundy moved to Portsmouth with her family at an early age, attended Portsmouth public schools, and graduated from Norfolk State University with a degree in social work and a minor in special education; and

WHEREAS, after several years of teaching emotionally disturbed children, Brenda Lundy joined the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Department in 1985, graduated from the D.A.R.E. School at Longwood College in 1987, and became the head of the entire Portsmouth Sheriff’s Department D.A.R.E./Crime Prevention Office in 1993; and

WHEREAS, Brenda Lundy’s abundant energy, her natural affinity for teaching children, and her commitment to the D.A.R.E. program have brought her great success and recognition from the Portsmouth community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Lieutenant Brenda Lundy on being the recipient of the Deputy of the Year and the Michael Bentoski Memorial Awards; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lieutenant Brenda Lundy as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for her many contributions to law enforcement and anti-drug programs.
