Commending the Patrick Henry High School football team.

WHEREAS, on December 10, 1994, the football team from Patrick Henry High School, in Western Hanover County, capped a flawless 1994 season by capturing the Virginia High School League Group AAA, Division 5, state championship; and

WHEREAS, by defeating previously undefeated Deep Creek High School of Chesapeake, the Patriots from Patrick Henry returned to Hanover County with their school’s first-ever state championship in any team sport; and

WHEREAS, the Patriots also became the first football team from the Central Region to win a Group AAA football championship in 15 years; and

WHEREAS, relying on a dominant offensive line, a quick and elusive backfield, and a hard-hitting and opportunistic defense, Coach Ray Long’s Patriots finished the season with an unblemished record of 14-0; and

WHEREAS, a dominant team throughout the season, the Patriots overcame the disappointment of last year’s loss in the state tournament semi-finals; and

WHEREAS, a team led by its seniors, many of whom have played together since elementary school, the Patriots of Patrick Henry High School proved themselves worthy champions and fine representatives of their school, the Hanover community, and the Central Region; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly salute the Patriots of Patrick Henry High School on their first state football championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Ray Long in honor of the 1994 dream season of the Patrick Henry High School football team.
