HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 413
On the death of Abe Goldblatt.

WHEREAS, Abe Goldblatt, a journalist with The Virginian-Pilot for 63 years, died on November 26, 1994; and

WHEREAS, a native of Portsmouth, Abe Goldblatt was the son of Rofel Goldblatt, a Lithuanian refugee from Cossack oppression who opened a tailor shop in Portsmouth; and

WHEREAS, at age 18, Abe Goldblatt was hired in 1931 by The Virginian-Pilot sports editor when he wrote a letter chiding the editor for a misguided selection to the All-Tidewater football team; and

WHEREAS, for more than six decades, Abe Goldblatt covered high school, college, and professional sports in the Tidewater area, compiling an encyclopedic knowledge of local players, coaches, and personalities; and

WHEREAS, his skills as a journalist, his vast knowledge of sports in Tidewater, and his singular compassion for those who play the games earned him the undying respect, admiration, and affection of the many thousands of individuals who appeared in his stories; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a uniquely talented and beloved Virginian, Abe Goldblatt; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Abe Goldblatt as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
