1995 SESSION
LD8744220WHEREAS, the Smith Mountain Lake Association (SMLA), the largest and oldest volunteer community organization at Smith Mountain Lake, was founded in November 1969; and
WHEREAS, originally known as the Smith Mountain Lake Businessman’s Association, the SMLA dropped its business orientation shortly after incorporation in 1970 and became an organization that has focused on the environment and community issues; and
WHEREAS, over its quarter-century of service, the SMLA has worked with state agencies, with local governments, with institutions of higher education, and with large corporations to improve the lives of hundreds of families and to protect the invaluable environment of Smith Mountain Lake; and
WHEREAS, among its more notable achievements, the SMLA has worked with the State Water Control Board to stop the City of Roanoke from dumping sewage into the Roanoke River, which feeds into the Lake; has urged the surrounding counties to work cooperatively through the Smith Mountain Lake Policy Advisory Board; has proposed and supported legislative initiatives to improve boating safety; and has originated the idea for the Smith Mountain Lake Volunteer Fire Company; and
WHEREAS, the SMLA has also worked to increase law enforcement on Smith Mountain Lake, to improve water level stability and monitor water quality, to develop Smith Mountain Lake State Park, and to support tougher erosion and siltation control regulations; and
WHEREAS, a strong, growing, and determined organization, the SMLA, through many ongoing initiatives, continues to defend and protect both the environment and the quality of life for the many thousands of Virginians who enjoy the unique beauty of Smith Mountain Lake; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Smith Mountain Lake Association on the occasion of its 25th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Smith Mountain Lake Association in honor of its 25 years of dedication to the environmental and economic health of Smith Mountain Lake.
