VIRGINIA ACTS OF ASSEMBLY -- CHAPTER An Act to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered 22.1-208.2:1, relating to the Community of Readers Program. [H 2163] Approved

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 22.1-208.2:1 as follows:

§ 22.1-208.2:1. Community of Readers Program established.

A. To promote the literacy development of first and second graders and to sustain community involvement in and responsibility for the education of children, there is hereby established the Community of Readers Program.

B. The Program shall consist of no more than twelve pilot projects that may include, but shall not be limited to, (i) recruitment of volunteer tutors from the community; (ii) training of Community of Readers reading coordinators and of volunteer tutors by such reading coordinators to assist pupils in the development of reading skills; and (iii) materials, research, and program planning and development support in cooperation with local school divisions.

C. The Virginia Department of Education will distribute and monitor the funds necessary to implement the Program from such funds as may be appropriated for such purposes according to guidelines established by the Department.
