HB 601 Medical records storage.

Introduced by: Alan E. Mayer | all patrons    ...    notes | add to my profiles

SUMMARY:

Medical records storage. Clarifies the methods by which medical records may be stored. This bill explicitly allows medical records to be stored in computerized, microfilmed, photographic, mechanical, electronic or chemical form or process. Further, if the technological storage process creates an unalterable record, paper copies may be destroyed in a manner preserving patient confidentiality. Any records that cannot be technologically stored must be preserved. Copies of technologically stored records are admissible as evidence in court. This provision addresses the dilemma of many health care facilities concerning storage of voluminous hard copies of patients' records. With the advent of technology creating unalterable records, i.e., records in which alterations are immediately discernible, (certain fiber optic and CD ROM processes), the need to maintain hard copies has been alleviated.
