1994 SESSION
LD2538693WHEREAS, Dr. Barrington H. Bowser, Sr., a prominent Richmond pediatrician for many years, died on June 3, 1993; and
WHEREAS, a native of Richmond, Barrington Bowser was a graduate of Virginia Union University and Howard University Medical School; and
WHEREAS, after completing his internship and residency at the Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, Dr. Bowser returned to Richmond and became the city's first black pediatrician in private practice; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Bowser also served as assistant to the medical director of the Richmond Public Schools, the first black pediatrician to do so, from 1948 until 1966; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Bowser served as chief of staff and chief of pediatrics at the former Community Hospital in Richmond and was also on the staff at Richmond Memorial Hospital; and
WHEREAS, among Dr. Bowser's many professional affiliations was membership in the Richmond Medical Society, the Old Dominion Medical Society of Virginia, the Richmond Academy of Medicine, and the Virginia and American Medical Associations; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Barrington Bowser leaves a lasting legacy of service to his profession, to his patients, and to the Richmond community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of Dr. Barrington H. Bowser, Sr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Barrington H. Bowser, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
