SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 181 Offered January 25, 1994 Mourning the death of Nina Friedman Abady. ----------

WHEREAS, Nina Friedman Abady, a noted urban planner, developer, promoter, died on November 5, 1993; and

WHEREAS, Nina F. Abady, graduated from Goucher College at age 19, and from the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Social Science, Richmond Professional Institute, now a part of Virginia Commonwealth University, and as a graduate of T. C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond, from which she earned her law degree, she remained the first woman to attend the law school from 1958 to 1960; and

WHEREAS, a native of Steubenville, Ohio, Nina Friedman Abady grew up in Macon, Georgia and Selma, Alabama, where she was impressed by the "principle of the beloved community," espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King, later being appointed by Governor Lawrence Douglas Wilder to Virginia's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Commission; and

WHEREAS, she devoted a portion of her life to education and the profession of nursing, serving as an instructor of sociology at Richmond Professional Institute, and at the School of Nursing at the Medical College of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, as a resident of the City of Richmond, she devoted herself to educating others, raising funds for worthy causes, to urban development and cultural enrichment; and

WHEREAS, for her tireless commitment to improve the quality of life for others, Nina Friedman Abady was recognized by her peers for her leadership, talents, and gifts to the Virginia Center for the Performing Arts, the Virginia Opera and Friends of the Opera in Richmond, Downtown Presents, 2 Street, Festival Park, Virginia Union University, and many other community and civic endeavors; and

WHEREAS, Nina Friedman Abady is remembered fondly and esteemed by all who knew her; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of an accomplished and valuable Virginian, Nina Friedman Abady; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Nina Friedman Abady, "True Friend of Richmond," as an expression of the high esteem in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
