Commending The McLean Providence Journal.

WHEREAS, founded on April 27, 1944, The Providence Journal of McLean has covered not only the Town of McLean, but also Vienna, Great Falls, Tysons Corner, Falls Church, and Oakton; and

WHEREAS, under the guidance of its first editor and publisher, Richard "Dick" McAllister Smith, The Providence Journal sold its first copies for a penny each; and

WHEREAS, in 1956, Dick McAllister Smith passed The Providence Journal to the stewardship of William J. Elvin, who guided the paper until 1986, when the paper was turned over to the capable hands of Dear Communications, Inc., a family-owned business; and

WHEREAS, the newspaper has grown from a staff of one to a team of 20 dedicated employees who sometimes work 12 or 16-hour days, and frequently for 6 or 7 days a week, to publish an award-winning newspaper; and

WHEREAS, The Providence Journal has kept the residents of the Providence District (now the Dranesville District) informed of the happenings in their many organizations, churches, schools, and other groups of public interest; and

WHEREAS, The Providence Journal has afforded a forum for discussion, presenting both sides of every question of public interest; and

WHEREAS, The Providence Journal has been the medium through which the merchants and other businesses of the Dranesville District have presented their messages to every family within its area of circulation; and

WHEREAS, The Providence Journal has chronicled three generations of McLean area residents and has featured thousands of people in its pages; and

WHEREAS, while compiling local history each week and acting as the community's archives, The Providence Journal has witnessed the life of the community change from country homes to corporate office parks and residential neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, The Providence Journal maintains an open-door policy with the community, listening to and involving residents, civic leaders, and organizations in its news-gathering efforts; and

WHEREAS, The Providence Journal will celebrate its 50th year in continuous service to the McLean area on April 27, 1994; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly recognize the outstanding contribution of The Providence Journal in carrying out its responsibilities to its community and heartily congratulate those who have played a part in bringing the newspaper to its 50th anniversary year; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Editor of The Providence Journal, along with the best wishes of the General Assembly for its continued success and prosperity.
