HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 64 Commending Menchville High School in Newport News. Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 21, 1994 Agreed to by the Senate, January 27, 1994

WHEREAS, in September 1993, Menchville High School in Newport News was named a winner of the national Drug Free School Recognition Program; and

WHEREAS, the program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, recognized 59 schools nationwide, and Menchville High School was one of only 16 high schools honored; and

WHEREAS, in preparation for applying for the program, a faculty/student committee at Menchville identified 25 programs at the school that addressed Tobacco, Alcohol, and Other Drugs (TAOD) prevention; and

WHEREAS, the range of these programs, and their wide focus on the different forms of substance abuse, impressed the U.S. Department of Education officials who visited the school to evaluate the programs; and

WHEREAS, crucial to the success of Menchville's programs against substance abuse is the strong support from the faculty, who have shown a willingness to assist their students beyond academic achievement; and

WHEREAS, the distinct honor bestowed on Menchville High School will give greater impetus to the worthwhile efforts of the school community to eliminate the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other harmful drugs among the students; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the students, faculty, and administration of Menchville High School for their successful efforts and for winning national recognition for their anti-drug programs; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John Kilpatrick, principal of Menchville High School, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations on winning this most prestigious honor.
