An Act to amend and reenact §§ 5.1 and 5.7 of Chapter 759 of the Acts of Assembly of 1972, which provided a charter for the Town of Tappahannock, relating to the chief of police.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That §§ 5.1 and 5.7 of Chapter 759 of the Acts of Assembly of 1972 are amended and reenacted as follows:

§ 5.1. Appointment.

The town council may appoint such officers of the town as they may deem necessary. Such officers may include, but shall not be limited to, a town manager, a town clerk, a town attorney, a town treasurer, a town sergeant and justices of the peace and a chief of police. The enumeration of officers in this section shall not be construed to require the appointment of any such officers herein named. Officers appointed by the town council shall perform such duties as may be specified in this Charter or by the town council.

§ 5.7. Appointment, power and duties of chief of police.

The town council may appoint a sergeant chief of police for the town. He shall have all powers and authority conferred by law upon the sergeants chiefs of police of towns, and shall discharge the same duties as sheriffs within the corporate limits of the town and for a distance of one mile beyond the same. He shall discharge such further duties as the town council or town manager may impose.

2. That an emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
