2024 SESSION
WHEREAS, Donald Wayne Rife, respected surface coal miner, esteemed public servant and civic leader, and beloved member of the Dickenson County community, died on December 8, 2023; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from Clintwood High School and attending what is today Carson-Newman University, Donald “Donnie” Rife found success in a career as a surface coal miner, working tirelessly to support the energy needs of the Commonwealth and beyond; and
WHEREAS, Donnie Rife gave generously of his time in service to the community for more than 30 years as a member of his local Lions Club, which he served as both governor and president; and
WHEREAS, Donnie Rife proudly served the interests of his constituents as a member of the Dickenson County Board of Supervisors, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the betterment of Dickenson County; and
WHEREAS, Donnie Rife supported the responsible growth and development of the Commonwealth through his involvement with several organizations over the years, including the board of the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority and the Virginia Gas and Oil Board; and
WHEREAS, Donnie Rife’s devotion to ensuring the well-being of others was evident in his work with various charitable organizations in Dickenson County, including St. Mary’s Health Wagon and the Clintwood Rescue Squad, which he served as chairman of the board; and
WHEREAS, Donnie Rife will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his loving wife of 43 years, Doris; and by numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Donald Wayne Rife, a treasured member of the Dickenson County community, whose kindness and generosity touched countless lives; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Donald Wayne Rife as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for his memory.
