Celebrating the life of Robert C. Marsh, Jr.

WHEREAS, Robert C. Marsh, Jr., of Danville, the longest-serving faculty member of Averett University and a distinguished artist whose work earned national acclaim, died on October 12, 2022; and

WHEREAS, a native of Alabama, Robert Marsh earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Alabama and a master’s degree from the University of Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, in 1969, Robert Marsh relocated to Danville and accepted a position as an art professor at Averett University; over the course of his 54-year career, he inspired generations of students through his joyful optimism and zest for life; and

WHEREAS, Robert Marsh’s art was beloved locally and well-known throughout the Commonwealth and the nation; his work was displayed in galleries and museums across the country, including in the Library of Congress and the National Collection of Fine Arts of the Smithsonian Institution; and

WHEREAS, Robert Marsh earned renown for the graceful storytelling of his pieces and for his technical skill, including his control of color and organization of white space; and

WHEREAS, in January 2023, Averett University honored Robert Marsh’s legacy of contributions to the institution and the art world at its Founders’ Day celebration; and

WHEREAS, Robert Marsh will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 52 years, Sandra; his sons, Clinton and Andrew, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Robert C. Marsh, Jr., a talented artist and passionate educator; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert C. Marsh, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
