SUMMARY AS PASSED HOUSE:

Child support; health care coverage. Provides that in any case in which a court enters an order directing the payment of spousal support in cases in which there are minor children that the parties have a mutual duty to support or any payment of child support or when the Department of Social Services issues an order directing the payment of child support, and when it appears that the gross income of a custodial parent of a dependent child is no more than 200 percent of the federal poverty level, the court or the Department of Social Services shall notify the parties of the availability of medical assistance through the Family Access to Medical Insurance Security plan or other government sponsored coverage through the Department of Medical Assistance Services.

SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:

Child support; health care coverage. Requires courts and the Department of Social Services, when making determinations regarding health care coverage for a dependent child who is the subject of a child support order, to (i) determine whether the child meets the eligibility requirements for the state program of medical assistance, Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS) plan, or other government-sponsored health care coverage if it appears that the child may qualify for such coverage options and (ii) if the child qualifies for such coverage, determine whether such coverage is equivalent to any other coverage option that is available at a reasonable cost, taking into consideration deductible and copayment requirements.
