HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 4036 Commending Ángel Cabrera.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, July 9, 2019

 

WHEREAS, Ángel Cabrera served as George Mason University’s sixth president from 2012 to 2019; and

WHEREAS, George Mason University was established as an independent educational institution in 1972 and currently operates campuses in Fairfax, Arlington, Prince William County, and Incheon, South Korea, with an enrollment of more than 37,000 students from 130 countries and all 50 states; and

WHEREAS, under President Cabrera’s leadership, George Mason University reached the top tier among research universities in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education in 2015 and was reaffirmed in 2018; and

WHEREAS, President Cabrera increased enrollment nearly 15 percent, including a 32 percent growth in minority undergraduate students during the last four years, while strengthening quality and outcomes; and

WHEREAS, George Mason University accounted for 64 percent of the net public university enrollment growth in the Commonwealth between 2010 and 2018; and

WHEREAS, President Cabrera took the lead to establish a unique online partnership, the Online Virginia Network, and launched the NOVA ADVANCE Partnership with Northern Virginia Community College, a national model for successful transfer; and

WHEREAS, President Cabrera more than doubled George Mason University’s endowment and annual fundraising and completed the most successful fundraising campaign in university history; and

WHEREAS, President Cabrera helped attract Amazon to the Northern Virginia Region and secured a commitment from the Commonwealth to expand the Arlington campus to support growth in technology disciplines; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Ángel Cabrera hereby be commended for his service to the Commonwealth as president of George Mason University; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ángel Cabrera and his wife, Beth Cabrera, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ gratitude for their extraordinary efforts to promote access and excellence at George Mason University during the last seven years.
