2019 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, V. T. Crawford, an icon in the Smith Mountain Lake community who established the Scruggs Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, died on May 23, 2019; and
WHEREAS, V. T. “Slim” Crawford began his career in public safety with the Burnt Chimney Volunteer Fire Department and later founded the Scruggs Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, ultimately serving as chief for more than 40 years; and
WHEREAS, Slim Crawford witnessed the growth of the Scruggs community from small homes and campgrounds to one of the most densely populated areas in the region and worked to ensure that the Scruggs Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department continued to provide timely, effective service; and
WHEREAS, under Slim Crawford’s leadership, the Scruggs Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department became one of the first joint fire and rescue departments in Franklin County and later formed a specialized dive team to respond to the unique challenges of operations on and around the lake; and
WHEREAS, after his retirement as chief, Slim Crawford remained active with the Scruggs Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department as vice president of the department’s board; and
WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Slim Crawford was a charter member and deacon at Westlake Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, Slim Crawford will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loving wife of 58 years, Jane, and numerous other family members, friends, and fellow firefighters; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of V. T. Crawford, who served the Smith Mountain Lake community for decades as a volunteer firefighter and founding chief of the Scruggs Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of V. T. Crawford as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
