2019 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, John Britton Shorter, Jr., a patriotic veteran and a business owner who served generations of Chatham residents as an automobile mechanic, died on October 1, 2018; and
WHEREAS, John “Junior” Britton Shorter, Jr., learned the value of hard work and responsibility at a young age while growing up on his family’s farm near Callands; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from high school, Junior Shorter was inspired to serve his country during World War II and lied about his age to join the United States Navy; and
WHEREAS, Junior Shorter deployed to the Pacific Theater, where his ship, a Dutch ship being used by the United States as a transport, was sunk off the coast of the Philippines; he spent the rest of the war aboard the USS Rudderow, a state-of-the-art destroyer escort, and earned two Bronze Stars; and
WHEREAS, after his honorable military service, Junior Shorter returned home to the Commonwealth and continued working at a car dealership before opening his own service station in 1951; and
WHEREAS, for many years, Junior Shorter and his brother, Bobby, owned and operated Shorter Brothers Garage, a Chatham institution that is still operated by the Shorter family; and
WHEREAS, Junior Shorter was a celebrated raconteur, who delighted friends and family members with tales of his adventures, local history, and pearls of wisdom; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by his beloved wife, Dorothy, and his daughter, Cindy, Junior Shorter will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his daughter, Lisa, and her family, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of John Britton Shorter, Jr., a respected member of the Chatham community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John Britton Shorter, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
