2018 SPECIAL SESSION I
18200240DWHEREAS, for 50 years, Pinewood Lake has provided residents of Fairfax County with an exceptional place to live and raise a family; and
WHEREAS, Pinewood Lake, located in the U.S. 1 Corridor of Fairfax County, was built on 91 acres of what was formerly Muddy Hole Farm, one of General George Washington’s five farms that made up the Mount Vernon estate; and
WHEREAS, the Pinewood Lake Homeowners Association held its first meeting on April 2, 1968, and the self-managed community has grown to offer a rich array of amenities, along with 25 acres of beautiful green spaces and a five-acre lake, with convenient access to public transportation; and
WHEREAS, today, Pinewood Lake is a diverse, inter-generational community with young families living alongside original residents in 542 townhomes; and
WHEREAS, Pinewood Lake’s children attend the newly-renovated Woodlawn Elementary School, Walt Whitman Middle School, and the historic Mount Vernon High School, which has graduated a Virginia Governor, U.S. Senator, and numerous other prominent Virginians; and
WHEREAS, Pinewood Lake abuts Muddy Hole Park, which has tennis courts, swings, and picnic areas, and Huntley Meadows Park, the largest park in Fairfax County, which is known for its wetlands and hiking and cycling trails; and
WHEREAS, Pinewood Lake builds community pride and fellowship through special events like holiday celebrations, cookouts, a National Night Out observation, yard sales, and cleanups; and
WHEREAS, many former residents have gone on to become leaders in a wide range of professions, carrying with them the strong community spirit of Pinewood Lake; the neighborhood has also been home to former professional football player Todd Lyght and two Olympic trialists, both of whom were members of a local swim team; and
WHEREAS, Pinewood Lake will host a special celebration on June 2, 2018, to commemorate the community’s unique 50-year history; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Pinewood Lake hereby be commended on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Pinewood Lake as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for the important contributions of Pinewood Lake residents to the Fairfax County community.
